NDOP 2009 - Earth Friendly Puppet Party

The ever-changing Texas weather threatened our NDOP but despite the brisk winds and ominous gray clouds the rain respectfully stayed away all Sunday. We had a very nice turnout of kids, parents and grandparents for our 11th Annual National Day of Puppetry event. We had not anticipated sharing the auditorium with voting machines, but since early voting starts today, the room was lined with blue voting booths both large and small.

Jesse & Elizabeth from the Southlake Library introduced the audience to the wonders of shadow puppetry plus tips for making shadow puppets from recycled cardboard. Some of the kids got to try their hands at manipulating the shadow puppets to the tune of Old MacDonald. Then the kids got to choose their own selection of pre-cut shadow puppets to take home.

Next everyone got busy crafting their own puppets from recycled boxes. Who knew that learning to curl paper strips would be so magical? As soon as everyone had finished his or her new puppet creation - the rehearsal began of our green fairy tale - "Rapunzel's Folly." Our dear Molly would have appreciated this as we carried on in the tradition of her "Champion Messer-Upper". The Plastic Bag Princess, the Clatter Man and the oh so messy Rapunzel were put on notice that we have had it with their slovenly ways. We all want a clean planet and we pledge to do our part to "Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, our planet we will not Abuse!"

A special thanks to Jim for the great recycled set decoration pieces. Jesse & Elizabeth, thank you so much for being a part of our puppet party!
Thanks also to Carol and the Audelia library staff - we are grateful for all your help in making our event run smoothly.
And a Texas sized thank you to all LSPG members and friends - what a wonderful team effort!

Boxes for workshop

LSPG Members: Remember to save your cardboard food boxes for the NDOP workshop - just flatten them because we will be turning them inside out for the workshop. Smaller boxes such as mac & cheese size, snack cracker boxes are good. What we don't use we will recycle. Bring them to the NDOP.

NDOP Workshop Materials Needed for our Earth Friendly Puppet Party

For our 2009 National Day of Puppetry workshop we will be making puppets of recycled materials.

At our March 15 meeting we will be in the auditorium of the Audelia library. Half of the meeting will be devoted to building some sample puppets for the library display case which we have for the month of April. Note: the display case shelves are 11" deep, so keep that in mind. The other half of the time will be spent rehearsing the skit that Lynn B., Sandy S. and Sandra McL (Mimi) have written for the event.

If you are inspired to make some puppets for the display case before the March meeting that will be GREAT! just bring them with you. Feel free to use a variety of plastic bottles, boxes, etc. but we are going to concentrate on collecting small to medium size cardboard food boxes for the NDOP workshop. To keep things simple, we will use glue sticks, tape, and staples to put things together.

Please start collecting:

small cardboard food boxes such as boxes for cereal, mac & cheese, cereal bars, etc. You can open them and flatten them, but don't cut any flaps off - just be sure they can ge re-assembled. (Junque Mail Jill - pictured above - is made from a small cereal box approximately 9" x 6" s 2", for example);

bread twist ties;

shiny candy wrappers;

glossy junk mail papers, such as the Coupon Clipper or old magazines are OK, too.

Please contact me if you have any questions -
Thanks!
Pat

The LSPG met at the Audelia Library on Sunday the 18th and were entertained by a performance of "Don't Bug Me" by Sandra McLean of S&D Puppetry with the help of Lynn Baskind. Frieda the Fairy (pictured above) didn't want to go to school and hilarity ensued!

Plans were made for the upcoming National Day of Puppetry. "An Earth Friendly Puppet Party" will be the theme of the day. A puppet making workshop for kids and parents using recycled and found objects will begin the afternoon, followed by rehearsing with the newly created puppets and concluding with a grand performance of an Earth Day play for family and friends. A Puppet Slam/Potpourri is also being planned to take place at the Bath House Cultural Center - details coming soon.

Meetings:

February 15 - TBA - possible location change

March 15 - Audelia Library - conference room - guild members will prepare puppets and props from recycled materials for the April library display case and go over the script for the Earth Day skits.
